Did you know?
Tomatillos are native to Mexico and Central America and were cultivated long before tomatoes.
They’re sometimes called “Mexican husk tomatoes”, though they are not tomatoes at all. They are separate species in the nightshade family. They belong to the Physalis genus, while tomatoes are in the Solanum genus.
The papery husk protects the fruit and should be removed before eating.
Tomatillos are a key ingredient in salsa verde.
Rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, they support eye health, especially in aging individuals.
Drawback
Unripe or raw tomatillos can be sour and may upset the stomach in large quantities.
The sticky coating beneath the husk contains natural compounds that can cause mild irritation if not washed properly.
While rare, some people may be allergic to tomatillos, especially if sensitive to nightshades.
